According to the CDC, obesity now affects 1 in 5 children and adolescents in the United States. Overweight children are at a risk of developing serious health issues at an early age which ultimately can lead to major health concerns in their adult years which makes Childhood Weight Management a prime concern. Healy Fit Kids is a therapeutic childhood obesity program that is specifically designed for children between the ages of 6-17. Upon completion of our 8-12 week program, your child will leave with the basic foundation that he/she will need for healthy lifestyle changes of good nutrition and exercise. We make this program fun and interactive so kids enjoy what they’re learning about.

How do I enroll my child and what requirements are there?

If you’re interested in having your child take part in our “Healy Fit Kids” program a medical diagnosis for obesity & prescription related to treating it are required. This means you will have to have a doctor’s referral for their condition. Kids between the ages of 6-17 are able to participate in the Healy Fit Kids program. Exercise is a key component of this Childhood Weight Management program so kids must be able to exercise. They will need to wear comfortable clothes and shoes they can work up a sweat in! Feel free to contact our highly trained physical therapist at Healy Physical Therapy & Sports Medicine in Cumberland, Warwick, and East Providence, RI.

What should I expect for my child as the program starts?

Once you obtain a doctor’s referral to our Childhood Weight Management program your child will be scheduled for an evaluation with a physical therapist to ensure that he/she is appropriate for our program, and to set goals for a positive outcome. Your child will be measured and weighed each week. His/her progress will be charted and their physician will receive updates. If your child is able, each participant will be required to attend a twice-weekly group meeting for an hour of exercise. At times, individual ½ hour sessions may be required. In addition to group meetings, each participant will receive a home exercise program based on their needs. Our program is fun, kid-friendly, and successful!
